Equal Opportunity Employment

It is important to understand your rights and responsibilities under equal opportunity and anti-discrimination laws in Australia.

You must be treated equally to other staff at your work, regardless of your gender, religion, political opinion, sexual preference, race, age, martial status, whether you are a migrant or not and whether or not you have a physical or intellectual disability . The workplace must promote people according to merit, and not according to any of the factors listed above.

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission is the organisation responsible for the practice of federal human rights and anti-discrimination laws. Information on the current law, complaints procedures and best practice guidelines are available on the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity commission's home page on www.hreoc.gov.au or you can call them on 1300656419. Each state also has Equal Opportunity Commission or an Anti-discrimination Commission.

Disability Rights

The Office of Disability is located in the Department of Family and Community Service. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 is concerned with access and equal opportunity. Further information on disability rights is available on the web at www.hreoc.gov.au.
