Education Support Program

This after-hours program provides primary and secondary students with educational support for mathematics homework and Arabic language learning. Tutors from the MSC assist children aged 6-15 years in a class environment. The mathematics homework program is an opportunity for school students to obtain help with mathematics homework from community members after-hours.

The Arabic language classes helps students maintain communication with their parents, and aids contact with relatives overseas, such as their grandparents. In addition, the Program provides on-going support through the writing and reading of stories, and activities in music and art. The Program also provides families with information in their own language about the students' progress.

  

Distance Learning

The MSC volunteers, through the existing links with other agencies and departments, will assist members to learn English at home. These services for people who are unable to attend school because of disability or other families responsibilities, but wish to improve their English skills.

The topics for this course will include:

English for real-life situations, listening to the radio, reading newspapers and advertisements, talking about day-to-day activities, asking for information, filling in forms and writing letters.

Support newly-emerging Sudanese with pathway to education

The MSC Homework Club provides a pathway to educational support for families in the newly-emerging Sudanese community who lack formal education levels suitable for supporting their children's education at home, or, who experience significant language and cultural barriers communicating with their children and school staff regarding educational issues.

Engage additional quality tutors, increase frequency of Homework Club nights, provide more feedback to parents about students' progress, provide information sessions preparing Sudanese parents for Parent-Teacher Days at school, build the resource bank available to students.

After Hours Arabic Language School:

Saturdays 1 - 5pm
At 12 Holland Court Flemington. For students aged between 6 and 15. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This program has about 45 students in the class from different cultural backgrounds.

      

Sundays 2 - 7pm
At West Sunshine Community Centre. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This class has approximately 38 students.

School Goals

To provide education services in Arabic and Dinka languages with listening, speaking, reading and writing. To build strong sense of self-esteem and develop high level of Sudanese linguistic and cultural understanding. To assist students with homework club.

Curriculum

The Curriculum is designed to cover significant topics that meet priorities in the Sudanese community. The classes develop students' cultural awareness as well as language. To help Sudanese children to become fluent in Arabic language such as grammar and literacy.
